UAPCS Board Candidate – Jessie Kidd

Passionate about service, Jessie Kidd devotes her life to the education and fellowship of all people.  A believer in the good of all people first, Jessie is a devoted wife, enthusiastic mother, and a caring neighbor connecting her family with people through service, shared meals, and a great conversation.  Active in her faith, Jessie serves the youth of North Ogden through teaching values, ethics and moral standards, organizing activities and service projects, inspiring the youth with her motivating example of hope, faith and belief that they too may grow into selfless young adults, confident in their strength to share their good with others.

Born and raised in the great state of Utah, Jessie’s family was one of the first to homestead along the Utah-Arizona border, farming and ranching the family stead is still one of her favorite pastime.  Jessie contributes much of her altruism to good parents who cherished each other and their marriage, devoted each and every Saturday to family sweat labor, and always gave the advice to, “look it up,” upon receiving any question from an inquisitive daughter.  Jessie’s love of Ogden goes generations back: Jessie’s parents met while at Weber State University majoring in Biochemistry and Soil Science, her grandparents grew up across the street from each other on Patterson Street, and Great Uncle Bill worked as a foreman at the American Can Factory, now home to her school, the DaVinci Academy of Science and the Arts!

Jessie graduated from Utah State University in 1998 with a degree in Secondary Education, emphasis in the social sciences, and again in 2009 from Western Governors University with a Masters degree in Education , Management and Innovation. Jessie taught for seven years before beginning her administrative experience, teaching students her love of history, philosophy, economics and sociology.

Jessie’s most privileged service comes while serving the youth of the greater Ogden area by leading the DaVinci Academy of Science and the Arts as their Executive Director.  An innovative public school  choice for more than 450 students grades 7-12, the DaVinci Academy was named the Utah state Charter School of the Year in 2008 for its pioneering approaches to improving student achievement through a Project-based, College Preparatory curriculum focused on integrating science, arts and technology throughout the student experience.  Jessie is most proud of DaVinci’s recent facility expansion of the school, purchasing and renovating the American Can Factory, .  At the heart of downtown Ogden, the DaVinci Academy.

Jessie Kidd will continue a life of dynamic and positive leadership through service to community.  She loves yoga, camping, reading, listening to NPR, date night Thursdays with her husband, Garen, and spending “Mom-time” with her three children, Julianne, 11, Jacob, 9, and Kristen, 3.  Jessie looks forward to increasing her breadth of public service including local government, but for now focuses her efforts on the youth of Ogden  as they invigorate her with the energy of adolescence, reminding her to enjoy every moment of every day, for life is truly a great gift.

UAPCS Board Candidate – Lincoln Fillmore

I’m Lincoln Fillmore, and I am excited to be running for another term to represent your school’s interests on the board of the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools.  In my years on the board, I have been a tireless advocate for improving the statewide charter environment by strengthening public policy and public opinion on behalf of charter schools.  A lot of progress has been made, and I think we can accomplish a lot more in the next two years.

My plans and platform for the next two years are to further strengthen our movement by:
·         Involve more stakeholders in the Association and the Movement by engaging business leaders, board members, parents, teachers, and students into an legion of charter supporters that can influence legislation and perception.
·         Focus on the development of statewide services and support programs that make best practices, quality programs, effective management, innovative ideas, and cost-savings measures available to all schools.
·         Increasing our focus on media relations and getting positive stories and accurate information in front of the public more often.
·         Continue the work and keep the pressure on the legislature to fund charter students at the same level as students in district schools.

We have an untapped network in the form of the dedicated parents, board members, and teachers that has the potential to turn our Association into what it ought to be—a powerful force that puts us in the top tier of influence in Utah.  We can achieve equal funding for our students, protect our autonomy and ability to innovate, dispel myths and misperceptions, and share our excellence and expertise so that we can continue to provide quality education options that meet the needs of Utah children.

I bring numerous strengths and extensive experience that specifically benefit the Association.
·         An intricate knowledge of charter laws, policy, and finance
·         Relationships with key legislators and opinion leaders that move our agenda forward
·         Experience as a teacher, principal, business manager, consultant, board member, and charter author
·         I have written some of the highest-scored grants in Utah, and have also written successful grants from the Daniels Fund and others that can help the Association with the resources we need to stay strong

I’ll use that experience to strengthen our Association.  My commitment is to enhance the financial support for your students and to protect your autonomy and ability to innovate.  I ask for your support.

UAPCS Board Candidate – Anna Treviño

Dear UAPCS Board;

My name is Anna Trevino. I am currently working as the lead counselor and assistant principal at the Utah County Academy of Sciences (UCAS), an Early College High School located on Utah Valley University campus. I am also involved in studies of Educational Leadership and Foundations at Brigham Young University where I have just completed my Doctoral degree this summer.

I would like the opportunity to be more actively involved in state level boards in order to learn, share and encourage others as they work to be successful in public charter schools. I would appreciate your consideration of me to serve as a member of the board. I believe I have a unique perspective and set of skills that I could offer the board as I have been actively involved in all grades and areas of education as a teacher, a counselor and as an administrator for the past 21 years.

My career in education began as a Kindergarten teacher in the Weber County School District where I taught for 10 years. After receiving my master’s degree in educational counseling I worked as an elementary school counselor in Weber County, and a junior high school counselor in Seminole County, Florida and in Alpine School District. I was able to return to BYU for a second master’s degree in education administration and for the past 6 years I have been a high school counselor and administrator at UCAS.

As a founding member of UCAS, I have firsthand experience and knowledge of how to start a charter school in the State or Utah. I understand the charter school application process, the importance of well written and implemented policies and procedures, and the challenge of selecting and working with local boards of education.

I have a great love for underserved and diverse populations in our state of Utah for the past 3 years I have assisted in implementing at program on the UVU campus called the Latino Educators of Tomorrow. This program involves Latino high school students in the Utah County area who are interested in a career in education. Students have been able to participate in a summer programs where they earn concurrent enrollment credit for university courses in education as they mentor younger Spanish speaking students.

Once again, I appreciate your consideration of me to become a member of the UAPCS board.

Thank you,

Anna Trevino, Ph.D.
